Start early

When starting the pruning process, you must first ensure that you have the correct tools, and that these tools have been sharpened. Using unsharpened tools to prune your tree may cause irreparable damage.

You need to get rid of the dead branches. Pruning dead branches should be the first task you decide to take on, This is important for the appearance of your tree, as well as its health because it reduces the risk of spreading decay.  

Central leader
